I'm thinking of starting a budget build from scratch, budget is 拢400.
Athlon II X3 450
Biostar A880GU3 mATX mobo
4GB DDR3 (thinking Corsair, Crucial or Kingston here)
Standard 500gb Seagate hard drive or maybe stretch to a 1Tb
Standard LiteOn 24x DVD
Coolermaster Elite 330 or 342, need opinions
BeQuiet 530W Pure Power - 120mm Fan, Dual 12v rails, 5x sata, 2x pci-e
Either a 1Gb GTX 460 or an ATI 6850
All this comes to around 拢420, I've got a copy of W7
Games I'll be playing are: BF3, Metro, Crysis, Civ, Starcraft, Skyrim, Brink, Batman, Deus Ex, Duke, Diablo, etc...
1. Is it worth waiting for AMD's Bulldozer or is an Athlon II x3 enough for BF3?
2. Which case is best, the aforementioned or any others around the 拢30 mark? Ie. What would be best for the components and expansion?
3. Are BeQuiet a good brand for PSU's?
4. Is it worth getting the slightly older (mature drivers) GTX460 or the newer (young drivers) 6850? Which would be more future proof?

First, props to your hardware choices!
I happen to have Crysis 2 here and it only rarely spikes above 50% on a quad core, which generally means it is really only capable of fully using a dual core, so you may be better of with a faster dual core ( phenom II @ 3.0GHz, then try to unlock those extra cores :-) ).
The L3 cache on the phenom II will make a 10-15% difference in games, so that is a serious consideration.
To answer your questions directly:
1. Yes, if you can wait for Bulldozer-based CPUs, then do so.
These CPUs should offer considerably better gaming performance than the phenom II, and possibly even more so than the i7.
This doesn't mean you'll be able to afford one, however, just that it will cause the phenom II line to drop in price as retailers dump their inventory. This effect may not be as pronounced as previous generations, however, due to Bulldozer's incompatibility with AM3, thus requiring new motherboards to utilize.
2. Case: You will likely need to live with your decision for the longest time of all your components, so it is not a good idea to skimp too much here. CoolerMaster cases have RAVE reviews, so your choices seem perfectly fine.
One thing you may want to consider to save money is a mATX case to go with your mATX board. If you don't need the expansion, then you can save some money and some room.
3. Power Supply: I have never used a BeQuiet PSU so I can only refer you to reviews. But this is one area where you should NOT save money. You get what you pay for, every time. If you go with a lesser-known brand, you should go with their middle-higher end products. That said, the reviews for your power supply and their higher models are rather positive. They seem to be inline with the likes of RAIDMax, which is a brand I have come to trust. A power supply should cost about $30 ( U.S. ) or more. Less should be a red flag.
4. AMD HD 6850 all the way. There is even a chance you can upgrade the card to a 6870 for some free performance. I would flip the other way, however, if you were comparing GTX 570 vs 6970... but that is out of the price range entirely.
5. You didn't ask, but the prices for DVDRW drives are nothing. Go with an LG with lightscribe, just make your update the firmware on the drive ( they are bad about shipping drives with outdated firmware ).

No Graphics card I think. or if I do, NVIDA crapster model.
It works Half Life 2 fine. Screws up with episode 1, 2, Rainbow six vegas 2, Deus ex 2 with high graphic performance.
What can I play that is cool?
And what I mean by cool is; blowing heads clean off shoulders with an assault rifle. What Can I play on My Computer?
Half Life 2 Episodes 1 and 2 have glitches that cause lock-ups with some older graphics cards, so that's no surprise. I assume that if you were online, you'd be playing Counter-Strike, so let's consider some of the single-player FPS's that would be entertaining on your laptop.
--Rainbow Six and expansions (which I think you already have)
--Unreal Tournament 2004 (still fun, easy to jump in and out of)
--Jedi Knight Academy (lightsabers -- 'nuff said)

Game recommendation for 360?
Recently I've been having seizures and I am no longer allowed to drive for six months and can't return to work until I can go for a large amount of time. So I'm stuck at home unable to leave the house for at least 2 weeks and I need to find a new game that I can play for approximately that time. That being said before someone gets on here with a smart crack at the fact that I shouldn't be playing games while having seizures they aren't the cause nor have I had one while playing video games. I have a very wide selection of games already so a list of games would be awesome. I'm a huge fan of RPGs but I like just about any kind of game except sports and racing games. Any ideas would be awesome! Thanks guys!

I love System Shock 2 with a passion. FPS games with exploration elements and/or RPG elements are phenomenal. The kinda game I'm looking for needs to not be so linear (Halo and Half-Life are linear in this way), have a nice focus on being able to backtrack at any time, and explore. RPG elements are appreciated, but are indeed optional.

It's a very hard game to find because it's relativly old and didn't get many ads but "Tactis Ogre: The Knight of Lodis" is my favorate game ever. It's for the GBA and i have come across 4 copys (i bought them all so most of my friends have it) It's a standard Tactic turn based stratagy game but the storyline is amazing. The game revolves around your choices (unlike fable or other similar games where the only choices are good or evil). You start out by talking to a fortune teller who askes you 6 (relativly philospophical) questions that determine how you start the game. As far as i know there are four game endings, i have only seen two of them and they are marvels of video game writing. It's a fun game but it gets hard, i have a total of 100 hours on my main account ( great game while traveling) and there is still so much i can do. It might be hard to find but it is by far the best game ever made.Any excellent and original imaginative games out there anymore, Id like to know more?

I have a Xbox 360, here are some of my favorite games: Oblivion, Fallout 3, both Godfathers, Borderlands, Mass Effect, Crackdown, all GTAs, Battle for Middle earth 2, Final Fantasy X, Deus Ex, Battlefront II, SOCOM, Splintercells, Hitman, Marvel ultimate alliance 1 and 2. Getting a new Dell and want to know what simple (but still good) games I should get for it?

I vote for the i3-2120 and the 6870. Why? Well, I have a 6850 and a quad core CPU.
My experience? Well, I have a Phenom II X4 which is actually a good bit slower than the 2400 or even the 2100. In 90% of games, it's just sitting there, twiddling it's thumbs. When it's actually stressed, only 1 or 2 cores are stressed, while the other 2 are just sitting there unable to help out. Most apps and games just aren't multithreaded, and can't make use of all four cores. This is where the i3 succeeds: 2 fast cores are better than 4 slightly slower ones.
My 6850, on the other hand, usually does fine at 720p. But it gets maxed out pretty easily. Looking back, I wish I had gone for a 6870: it's a big performance boost.

There are many benefits (in my opinion) to using an integrated graphics solution.
1. The obvious would be you save money.
2. Consumes less power (this is just comparing what is already on the motherboard/processor vs an additional graphics card)
3. Less worries about power to the graphics card. Depending on the card, you may need additional power, and with that you need to ensure that your PSU can power it (i.e. have the right connectors and have adequate power output). But since you're buying everything from HP (I presume), this point is moot.
Why I would want an add-on graphics card?
1. More outputs (for a multi-monitor setup). Most integrated graphics only have a single monitor output (with an exception of a few which have 2).

I have a Dell Dimension 4700 series desktop and i am wondering whether it will run Minecraft Beta, and if so, how well? To give a vague idea of what it can run for people who aren't familiar with the machine, it can run Deus Ex perfectly, Half Life 1 perfectly, Quake 3 Perfectly, Rainbow Six Athena Sword perfectly, Soldier of Fortune 2 perfectly.Will a Dell Dimension 4700 run Minecraft?

I'm looking for suggestions on good PC adventure games.
More specifically, I looking for games that have a "cosy" feel and have alot of interaction with people i.e. games that let me "enter a world" filled with interesting mysteries and people. Also, the longer it lasts the better.

3. Nancy Drew (Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon)
4. Grim Fandango and Longest Journey

I write reviews on Amazon.com and have purchased from Caiman a couple of times only to be grossly disappointed with their service both times. I looked them up on Google after that and they've got an awful customer service record which includes many claims like yours where customers got international versions of items ordered in English.

Batman Arkham City or Deus Ex Human Revolution?
Which game of the two should I get for my Ps3? I Love being stealthy in video games but I don't own any games dedicated to stealth, just games with stealths parts in them (uncharted 1-3 etc).
I heard on deus ex, you can play the entire game stealth like and that seems like my type of game. But I heard the A.I isn't the best and it can get annoying.
Batman has been getting Nothing but amazing reviews and great feedback and it looks amazing. Not sure if theres much stealth in this pick, so could someone please explain how stealth is in this game (sneaking up on enemies, using stealth to avoid etc). I also HEARD (not saying this is true), that it is a bit like Infamous 2, which I though was great.

They're both awesome games, it depends what you like.
Deus Ex gives you the option to choose how your character progresses. If you want to you can make him a tank or, as you'll probably want to do, a stealthy ninja type character with invisibility etc. The setting for the game is great especially if you like sci-fi and although the AI isn't the best in the world, it's not terrible and certainly not enough to detract from the gameplay.
Batman Arkham Asylum was a great game but you probably don't need to play it to understand its sequel, as long as you have a basic knowledge of the villains in Batman. You say you're not a fan of Batman and one of the games qualities was the way in which it portrayed Batman's various nemesis'
and managed to stay faithful to the comics. There is stealth in the game and yes, you do have to sneak up on people. Hiding in shadows and distracting enemies is an essential part of gameplay. This game will probably last you longer as the game world is bigger and there are loads of hidden collectibles, challenges and secrets to unlock which is fun.
As to which game is better, I personally think Deus Ex though I suspect most people would disagree with me. Arkham City has certainly got better scores in the reviews and is still an excellent game. If you like Sci-fi and a good stealth/shoot-em-up then Deus Ex is for you. If you like finding collectibles, exploring a large open map and have even a passing interest in the Batman franchise then Arkham City is your game.

Then Deus Ex came out when I was 11 or something, and was just as incredible as Half-Life was but it was an RPG.
Funnily I played System Shock last, was more into the fallout series in that period but was completely convinced.
I speak as a wholesale and utter fan of all three.
What I'm saying is - which game made the greatest influence In it's time and genre relative to eachother?Is Half-Life (the original), System Shock 1/2 or Deus Ex the most revolutionary within their genres?
I think Half-Life and System Shock were more a triumph of atmosphere and production values, whereas Deus Ex was a revolutionary change to game architecture. The degree of freedom Deus Ex gave you to approach problems was incredible, and it also made the game more immersive (I remember searching for Illuminati on the internet while playing it, scribbling clues down on bits of paper). You can tell I like RPG's but also dabble in 1st / 3rd player shooters :-). Morrowind was great, Oblivion was amazing so skyrim had to be #1. I played Diablo 1 and 2 like crazy (single and online) so I cannot wait for #3. Gears of War was just amazing. GoW 2 was very similar and didn't give me as much WOW factor but still was a good game (kinda got old towards the end). I hope the 3rd brings something new to the table. You can tell I like RPG's but also dabble in 1st / 3rd player shooters :-). Morrowind was great, Oblivion was amazing so skyrim had to be #1. I played Diablo 1 and 2 like crazy (single and online) so I cannot wait for #3. Gears of War was just amazing. I want to switch to Linux, how compatible is it with Windows programs?
I Currently use Windows Vista Home Premium, I've been using Windows since my first computer in 1997. Windows is great and all (as in it works) but I think its time for me to try something else.
Linux has been getting more popular lately and I think its time to give it a try. But i want to know how compatible is it with the windows stuff I have and mostly can't do without?
I have workstation-type programs like AutoCAD 2007 and 2010, Solidworks 2009, Adobe CS3 Master Collection
I use business programs like MS Office 2003 and sometimes Open Office.
I like to game alot, mostly older games (mostly because until recently I didn't have the hardware to run newer games) such as Deus Ex (1%26amp;2+ mods) Steam games like HL1, CS1.6, CS source, DOD1.3, HL2 + few source mods. And Crysis/Crysis Warhead.
And finally my PC is also used as a multimedia system, I use quite a few media players such as Real One, Quick Time, Divx, and VLC.
I know Most versions of Linux will run much faster than windows on older hardware, would there be any problems on a system like mine? (hardware related)

Intel i7 920 2.66 ghz Quad Core with HT
DDR3 1600 3x2GB (6GB RAM) triple channel mode

over 2 tb's of hdd space on 5 sata drives and 2 sata dvd +/- rw's, 16 in 1 internal card reader, floppy drive, bluetooth complete remote control (voice and mobile/cell phone control), 500gb NAS unit, webcam, digital camera, digital video recorder, usb peripherals hanging out my ears - and to much more to mention in case i bore you,
linux allocates swap space, even though i have only (?) 2gb of installed ram, i also have 4gb swap space,
which gives me total memory of 6gb - and i have a 32 bit operating system
i have never even got close to maxin out my ram - i can transcode and burn an avi to full disk in about 45 mins, do various other jobs with no decrease in performance at all,
the choice is yours

Boot in to windows insert the Ubuntu 10.04 LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the Wubi installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Ubuntu (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.
Once Ubuntu is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Ubuntu

Why do my games stall with the sound on?
directX %26amp; Open GL games oscillate between decent and poor frame rates when the sound card is enabled.
The drop to poor frame rate appears to be triggered by entering an area where several simultaneous sounds are being played.
When the sound card is disabled the frame rates remain constantly at a good level of performance.
Happens in all games new and old, such as:
Deus Ex 1
Doom 3
Oblivion
Swat 4
Spec:
On board sound card disabled in BIOS, replaced with Audigy below to try and fix problem.
All drivers un-installed and reinstalled with most up to date versions.

I agree with most of your list. But, I think Fable belongs up there as well. It was like KOTOR, but not Star Wars themed. It had a good story, and nice customization. It did have its disappointments (like not being able to explore very much), but I thought it very good. And it was the first game to allow you to make decisions that affect your environment.

Yeah your suggestions sound pretty cool but the most exciting and best idea for a video game would be a life simulator. I'm not just talking about sims but actually an rpg based on life you can do anything you want to for example you reach the age of 16 you can either turn up for school or bunk off. So lets say you go to school you can follow the timetable, start a fight, get a girl, beat the crap out the teacher and then get sent to a child institute or just go back home. Creating a game on this scale would take ages to create but i'm certain if done right could become the best game in existence.
I would LOVE to see an open world Dragon Ball Z game. I loved the show, but the games have been disappointing. I would want the gameplay to be like inFamous or Prototype, but in the DBZ world. I think it would be really cool if you start off as Gohan being all weak like he was at the beginning of the series and you have to build him up.
I know it would probably be too easy to be all that fun, but I would love to see a sandbox type Superman game that is realistic to the series. By that I mean, where you have all his strengths and weaknesses. Like Arkham Asylum was pretty realistic, he couldn't take that many bullets before he died. This is the opposite end of the same spectrum, I want to see a game where bullets don't effect Superman, only really strong foes and of course Kryptonite can harm him.
Also, I loved Spider-Man Web of Shadows, and liked the story of Shattered Dimensions pretty well but didn't like the game itself. PC RPGs, need help getting a good one.?
Okay so I'm currently looking for some games for my PC, prefarably RPGs, and i was thinking maybe Dragon Age Origins, but I already have it for my Xbox and I didn't really enjoy it but I REALLY enjoyed KOTOR on PC and I heard from peole that DA was a lot better for PC, but I'm not sure. Also I have Diablo 2 which i find pretty good, Deus Ex 1 and 2, not sure about them, The Witcher, again undecided on wether I like it, oh and I have both Mass Effects and Oblivion, so any reccomendation for a new PC RPG? Why has online gaming ruined games?
I remember when PS2 had the option for online gaming, but that wasn't the major focus of the game. You couldn't add people as friends, you couldn't make account, or anything like that. It had fun online play, but the story line in Call of Duty finest hour was amazing, now look at Black Ops, that story line was f*cking retarded. I on purpose have low expectations for a game as soon as it says I can play online with it, online play is fun, but it seems like they focus all the time into online play, and make the story line shitty.

IMO the best part of Black Ops was the campaign. I love the story, it really made me think about the Cold War. Also I don't play games for the online play, I love the campaign and getting achievements for the xbox, but I say games like CoD are more focused on the multiplayer now. Me and my friends talk about how fun the campaign and Special Ops are, not so much about the multiplayer.

If u look at this from a developer's viewpoint it's VERY attractive to make online games.
It takes a lot of work to script, animate, etc an offline RPG. U have to have extensive AI, script all NPC actions, animate them, and go through various other procedures to get the game to interact with the player. A storyline for an offline game must be compelling enough to engage the player. Therefore at least a minimal amount of effort must be made to create one.
With an online game, basically all u have to do is create a static world and then plop down online players into it. Some basic scripting and animating is added and "bang" u have an online game. And in the case of Call of Duty Black Ops, I don't think they hardly have any AI at all. As for storyline...an easily created "dial-a-plot" type storyline can be created (almost in the background). Some beginning narration to acquaint the player with the scenario is sometimes all that is needed.
Some good points about online vs. offline however, is that u are playing with another person whose reactions are not generated by a computer...and therefore are much less predictable. And it's fun to play against (or with) friends.
Some good points in favour of offline are, pause and gamesave. Also u can mod an offline game and play it. It's much harder to do this with an online game...and some games forbid it.

As a general rule, is the 500 series of graphics cards better than the 8000 series?
I'm about to buy a laptop primarily for university study, but that is also capable of playing most modern games.
My most anticipated game this year is Deus Ex: Human Revolution (how good was deus ex 1 amirite?!?!)
Anyway, the minimum specs says it requires a GeForce 8000 series graphics card.

Getting a desktop computer after a lifetime of laptops, what should I get?
I have the tendency to go for computers that are way too powerful for my needs. I've been checking out alienware and mac's for a little while now and when I go to set my specifications, I usually go for the most powerful (i.e. expensive) option. The end result is some monster powerhouse that is way too expensive for me, even when making payments. I don't know why but I can't drop this habit, I just have this mindset that stock computers are terrible. But then again, I'm running some programs that most laptops can just barely handle, and I usually like to surf the internet while these programs are running (Flash CS4 and Photoshop CS at the moment). That being said when I buy laptops, since I rarely have the option to upgrade them, they're cheap. I'm not sure why I haven't gotten a desktop by now already, I use my laptops like desktops.The laptop I'm using now, my Hp ZD8000, has the lid closed and hooked up to a mouse, keyboard and 17" monitor. As a Computer Science Major "second year" and working as a graphic artist that has worked in multiple graphic design studies. DO NOT GET A MAC. They are expensive and offer crap for performance. All the studios I work in don't even use mac, so don't get swayed into the logic that you need a mac for graphic design. I have a 1200 dollar PC and 2000 dollar iMac and my god was that a bad decision. I custom built my PC for 1200 and have 12 gigs of ddr3 ram, i7 quad processor, and 5 series nvidia graphics card. The imac came with a dual core and 1 gig of ram LOL.
Real professionals use PC's for graphic design.
I have about every program you have besides 1 or 2, and run's great on my pc.
I would recommend building one yourself, alienware is expensive and is more than what you want. I custom built pc's for about 20 graphic designers, and they all love them. Not to mention we can easily play any game we wanted on them. MAC is incompatible with many programs. If you don't know how to build one yourself, ask a friend or local computer shop. Heck even I can give you specs.
And if you really wanted the mac OS you can just run it on a virtual machine, complete with cheaper better hardware of a PC.

youll definately want 6GB or 8GB of RAM. any less youll have some problems. any more will be redundant. 6-8 is a good amount for your usage scenarios.
with Windows 7 youll get better multitasking on a deeper level than with Vista or XP. also, the newest photoshop is much more optimized for the new multicore CPUs.
I would say you can get a VERY powerful desktop for less than 2500. so it shouldnt be too hard not to spoil yourself a bit.

Hard to beat only 2 inches thick.
Dont buy from Newegg or Alienware, they rip you off and their products arent really compatible with themselves, thats more of a user thing but thats what happens when you let the user pick all the wrong components and you get a computer that wont turn on.

Gaming is my least concern but I'm tired of saying, "Hey! my computer can run deus ex 1... on FULL SETTING!" At least Deus Ex is awesome. But, I'd like to be able to have 3 or 4 games on my computer minimum, preferably more but Flash and other programs come first.

As a Computer Science Major "second year" and working as a graphic artist that has worked in multiple graphic design studies. DO NOT GET A MAC. They are expensive and offer crap for performance. All the studios I work in don't even use mac, so don't get swayed into the logic that you need a mac for graphic design. I have a 1200 dollar PC and 2000 dollar iMac and my god was that a bad decision. I custom built my PC for 1200 and have 12 gigs of ddr3 ram, i7 quad processor, and 5 series nvidia graphics card. The imac came with a dual core and 1 gig of ram LOL.
Real professionals use PC's for graphic design.
I have about every program you have besides 1 or 2, and run's great on my pc.
I would recommend building one yourself, alienware is expensive and is more than what you want. I custom built pc's for about 20 graphic designers, and they all love them. Not to mention we can easily play any game we wanted on them. MAC is incompatible with many programs. If you don't know how to build one yourself, ask a friend or local computer shop. Heck even I can give you specs.
And if you really wanted the mac OS you can just run it on a virtual machine, complete with cheaper better hardware of a PC.

ok i got deus ex 1 for computer and ive played it before but i had to reboot my comp and it deleted everything so recently i put the cd in and every time i put it in a message pops up saying

Check with manufactuer. Try installing by using add remove programs from start list under Control panel. But sounds like you'll need manufactuer's help to either reset it or get a download of it from them. Probably some kind of security thing so you can only download it once to your pc and not give it away for free to all your friends. Hope you kept the cd case and all the inserts. Good luck!
